When the Lord finished giving Joshua a personal message (verses 1-9), Joshua immediately begins doing as the Lord said. Joshua spoke to the leaders and gave them the Lord’s assignment. These leaders were pleased to follow Joshua, because they knew God was leading them. They said they would do all that Joshua commanded and would keep unity in the camp. The leaders only had one requirement for Joshua, which was the exact words God spoke to him not once, not twice, but three times. Now the leaders are telling Joshua, “Only be strong and courageous!” There must have been an issue of fear, otherwise Joshua would not have been told 3 times by God and once by the leaders under him to be strong and courageous.
I looked up the definition of the words strong and courageous.
Strong – 1. emotionally resilient; having the necessary emotional qualities to deal with stress, grief, loss, risk, and other difficulties 2. exerting influence: influential or authoritative by virtue of having or holding power
Courageous – quality of being brave; the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action
God never calls us to do something we cannot do. If He calls us to do the impossible, then He will go before us and make the way achievable. All we have to do is trust Him. If God is for us, who can be against us!
Lord, help us to be strong and courageous people and not give way to any form of fear. Increase our trust in You and help us to keep our focus on You and to follow Your commands. I pray the leaders that You raise up to lead Your people would also be strong and courageous, trusting You and follow Your Word. And that Your favor would go before them.
